Our latest publication: “The Thunderstone”

Just as the Newspaper “el Diaro Palentino” previously announced in the article “Los Secretos de Monte Bernorio” (“Monte Bernorio’s Secrets”), this year, 2014, is the 10th Anniversary of the creation of the “Monte Bernorio in its Environment” Project. And we want to celebrate it by organizing different events that we will be announcing in the next few months. This year, as soon as the research is finished, we will also reveal the surprises that the tessera found at Monte Bernorio has brought us after its restoration.

For now, the research doesn’t stop. There are several articles pending to be published. Today, we bring you the last article published on 2013, at the magazine “BSAA Arqueología”, from the University of Valladolid.

Entitled “Thunderstone found at the Oppidum of Monte Bernorio (Villarén, Palencia). About La Carunia at Pre-roman Cantabria”, Jesús F. Torres Martínez, Antxoka Martínez Velasco and Susana de Luis Mariño, present and analyze the information provided by the polished adzes and axes located during the archaeological interventions at Monte Bernorio. If you want to know why these axes are commonly known as “Thunderstones”, you can download it here.

New publications: Kobie and ArqueoWeb

This week, we bring you two new downloadable articles written by the ‘Monte Bernorio’ Archaeological Project team and published in two different scientific magazines.

The first one is ‘Monte Bernorio hillfort in the historical Cantabria. Nine centuries of History’, written by Jesús Francisco Torres Martínez (Kechu), Antxoca Martínez Velasco and Susana de Luis Mariño. This article constitutes an update of current knowledge on Monte Bernorio: defences, town planning, material culture and evidence of its destruction by the Roman army. It is published in Kobie: palaeoanthropology series, number 31, and it can be downloaded here.

The second article, ‘Rethinking Romanization of Cantabri and Astures’, by Santiago Domínguez Solera, offers a approach to the romanization of these peoples. It is published in ArqueoWeb, number 14, and it’s available for download here.

You can find more articles written by our team in the ‘Publications’ section of our website.

Presentation: “Aguilar, Barruelo and Reinosa during the Civil War”

Tomorrow, May the 4th, Felipe Ruiz Alonso will be presenting his book “Aguilar, Barruelo and Reinosa during the Civil War: offensive of the northern battle front Palencia-Santander”. The presentation will take place in the assembly room of La Compasión, in Aguilar de Campoo, at 12:00.

Felipe RuizAs it can be deduced by its title, this work deals with the events that took place in the villages of Aguilar de Campoo, Barruelo de Santullán, Reinosa and their surroundings during the Spanish Civil War. During the War, Monte Bernorio must have been a key strategic position, given its location between the provinces of Palencia, Santander and Burgos, as well as the control of communication routes and the surrounding villages that could be easily established. Those were the reasons why it became, once again, an important battlefield, as it had been during the Cantabrian Wars. This time in the confrontation between Nationals and Republicans.

The relevance of Monte Bernorio is highlighted in the book, in which Felipe Ruiz dedicates to this place an important part of one of its chapters, which also contains some photographs lent by “Monte Bernorio in its Environment” Project. One of them can be seen in the cover, and depicts the famous “Parapet of Death”, a bunker that is still preserved on the summit of Monte Bernorio.

We encourage you to assist to the presentation: Saturday May 4th, 12:00 AM. Assembly room, La Compasión (C/ Modesto Lafuente, s/n), Aguilar de Campoo.
